RRA Magazine

The RRA magazine, “The Reading Referee” ran from 1958 until 2014. It was first edited by Bert Newman, Peter Jefferies, and Len Forbes. At the beginning of 1962 Bert Newman resigned from the editorial team after his appointment as secretary of the Reading Institute League and Dick Sawdon Smith took over with Peter Jefferies as assistant editor.

Brian Palmer took over as magazine editor and Press Secretary in 1983, positions he held until 2000. John Coombes took over editing the magazine in 2001 and continued for 3 years, before the editorship was returned to Dick Sawdon Smith, a position he held until it ceased production in 2014.

In 2011 the magazine changed in format from a printed publication to an electronic distribution via email. Changing reading habits through website, email, and social media contributed to the end for The Reading Referee as a single entity. Reading RA continues on it’s quest to create and share engaging content shared through digital platforms complementing our ongoing commitment to monthly open meetings
