Open meeting – October 2012

Our monthly meeting is this Thursday 18 October, 7.45pm at our new venue – Earley Home Guard Social Club, Pitts Lane, Earley, Reading RG6 1BT. If you haven’t yet experienced our new venue, you’ll find that it is really pleasant and comfortable with cheap bar prices.

Our guest this month is Phil Sharp – widely regarded as one of the best Assistant Referees we’ve ever had. Phil served as a Premier League Assistant for many years, finally retiring from the list in 2010. During a long career as a FIFA Assistant Referee, he officiated at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, including the 2002 World Cup Final, as well as the 2004 Olympic Games Final. He is now the Referee Development Officer for Hertfordshire FA as well as working as a specialist instructor for Assistant Referees with UEFA as well as Turkey and Cyprus. His presentation‘Behind the Scenes at Euro 2012’ looks at Phil’s involvement and gives us a glimpse into a world of refereeing many of us can only dream about. It promises to be a really interesting evening so I do hope you’ll make it along.
As many of you will know, this month has been one of the saddest in our history with the untimely death of Simon Lee. We are also sad to have lost one of our long-serving Vice Presidents, Peter Stream. Our thoughts are very much with their families and those close to them. We will be observing a minute’s silence in memory of both of our former colleagues.
You can keep up with news and other refereeing things at www.readingrefs.org.uk
I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Stephen
