Stephen Green

It is with great sadness we have to report the untimely passing of one of our most revered colleagues, Stephen Green.

Stephen was an integral member of the local football community for over 30 years. Having qualified as a referee in 1985 Stephen joined Reading RA, became a committee member and progressed to Senior Referee Instructor on the Training Team.

An experienced tutor in both national and regional events, Stephen made a great difference to referees both in the Reading area and nationally, having progressed from an FA qualified Referee Instructor in 1993 to a Level 4 FA Referee Tutor in 2007.

Stephen’s knowledge, ability and unwavering dedication to the game were of a great benefit to the Referees’ Association, The FA and local competitions. Stephen was always ready to offer his valuable time to help others and was Reading RA Chairman for two lengthy periods.

Stephen was also a keen cyclist and competed in a host of cycling events home and abroad. Indeed, just a few weeks ago Stephen successfully cycled Le Col de Joux-Plane whilst on holiday.

At the time of his passing Stephen was taking part in the Prudential RideLondon 100 sportive and fundraising for Action for A-T, a little known degenerative childhood disease. Donations are welcome to his fundraising page; which has reached over £15,500 at the time of this post.

Stephen will be remembered. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
